Japanese Foreign Minister Yohei Kono Thursday arrived in Seoul to discuss issues on the Korean Peninsula with South Korean President Kim Dae Jung and Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Lee Joung Binn on Friday morning, the Japanese government officials said.

Kono, fresh from the Group of Eight (G-8) foreign ministers' meeting in Miyazaki, southwestern Japan, will brief them on the ministers' discussion on North Korea, the officials said.

Kono will also assess current issues on the peninsula in preparation for the July 21-23 G-8 summit in Okinawa Prefecture, and the July 27 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Regional Forum (ARF) meeting in Bangkok, which North Korea will attend, the officials said.

He will return to Tokyo on Friday.
