TOKYO, Aug. 15 Kyodo

Japan welcomes the agreement between the Sri Lankan government and Tamil Tiger rebels to start formal peace talks next month in Thailand, Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi said in a statement issued Thursday.

''We strongly hope that serious discussions aimed at attaining permanent peace are held and that a final agreement is reached,'' Kawaguchi said in the statement.

''When peace is attained, we will spare no efforts toward supporting reconstruction in the region,'' she added.

The Foreign Ministry of Norway, the peace broker, announced in a statement Wednesday that the long-awaited peace talks will take place between Sept. 12 and 17.

The agreement was reached in a meeting Wednesday in Oslo between a Sri Lankan government representative and Anton Balasingham, chief negotiator for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
