ISLAMABAD, Aug. 16 Kyodo

A court in Karachi issued notice to the Pakistani government Friday to respond in person Aug. 21 to an appeal filed by former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto challenging the ban on her and her Pakistan People's Party (PPP) from the Oct. 10 general elections.

Sindh High Court issued the notice to the attorney general after hearing brief arguments by Bhutto's lawyers against the decision of the Election Commission barring the PPP.

Election Commission rejected documents from 58 political parties, including the PPP, and banned them from the elections.

Election Laws promulgated by Gen. Pervez Musharraf, the president, prevent the self-exiled Bhutto from contesting the elections or heading a political party because she has been convicted by an anticorruption court.

But Bhutto's lawyer argued the election laws were formulated to prevent her specifically from coming back into power. Only voters should be allowed to decide who can be elected to parliament, he added.
