SINGAPORE, July 17 Kyodo
An area near the Orchard Road shopping district was evacuated Tuesday for the disposal of an unexploded World War II bomb unearthed earlier in the day, police said Wednesday.
The bomb, about the size of a rugby ball, was found at a construction site near the bustling shopping belt, police spokesman Chua Chee Wai said.
The area was cordoned off and construction workers at the site were evacuated while a bomb-disposal team from the military removed the explosive.
The Imperial Japanese Army invaded and occupied Singapore, then a British colony, from 1942 to 1945, and since then unexploded bombs have been found in various parts of the small island state from time to time.
