ISLAMABAD, July 18 Kyodo

At least one person was killed and several others were injured Thursday by U.S. bombing of a village in eastern Afghanistan, Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) reported.

The Pakistan-based news agency quoted informed sources in Jalalabad as saying U.S. warplanes bombed the residence of former Taliban leader Maulvi Noor Mohammad in Parakhil village, killing his brother Maulvi Ahmad.

Seven injured soldiers of the Jalalabad administration and two residents have been taken to a Jalalabad hospital, the report said.

Parakhil is in Khogaini district, nearly 55 kilometers west of Jalalabad, which is near the border with Pakistan.

Jalalabad residents said troops of the Jalalabad administration surrounded the village Wednesday night and U.S. planes bombed the area Thursday morning.

Maulvi Noor Mohammad, former chief justice in Afghanistan's vanquished Taliban government, later fought against the Taliban but has fallen out with the current administration led by President Hamid Karzai, the report said.
