Document says terrorists move in smaller teams: Indonesian police

Asian Political News,  Nov 14, 2005

JAKARTA, Nov. 14 Kyodo

Indonesian police on the resort island of Bali said Monday a document found at a safe house shows that the terrorist network in the country now prefers to move in smaller teams and use suicide bombing tactics.

Bali Police Chief I Made Mangku Pastika told reporters the document on the recent Bali bombing attacks was found at a house in the East Java town of Batu, where Malaysian top terror suspect Azahari bin Husin was killed during a police raid last week.

''(According to the document), now they prefer to move in smaller teams and carry out suicide bombings, because the pattern is difficult to be traced,'' Pastika said.

The Oct. 1 Bali bombing attacks occurred at a restaurant on Kuta Town Square in Kuta Beach and two cafes on Jimbaran Beach, claiming 23 lives, including three suicide bombers, and injuring 194 others.

Asked why the restaurant and cafes were chosen, Pastika said, ''because security at the three places was very weak.''

Bali was chosen, Pastika said, because the terrorists ''wanted to send a message to the international community on the purpose of their acts.''
