KATHMANDU, Jan. 14 Kyodo
Sixteen Maoist guerrillas and a soldier were killed in a battle on Saturday in central Nepal, the military said.
The clash occurred in Syangja district, about 200 kilometers west of the capital, it said.
The clash came two days after government troops launched aerial attacks in the district and adjoining Tanahun district, killing 10 insurgents, according to newspaper reports.
The rebels have been waging a bloody war since 1996 in a bid to overthrow Nepal's monarchy. More than 13,000 people have died and tens of thousands have been displaced in 10 years of fighting.
