S. Korea seeks observer status in SAARC

Asian Political News,  March 13, 2006

DHAKA, March 9 Kyodo

South Korea has filed a request to become an observer in SAARC, the South Asian cooperation bloc set to expand with Afghanistan as a new member and China and Japan as observers, Bangladeshi Foreign Minister M. Morshed Khan said late Wednesday.

South Korean Ambassador to Bangladesh Seong Ung Park formally handed over a letter of request to Khan at his office Wednesday afternoon. Bangladesh now chairs the seven-nation South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation.

''Dhaka will advise the SAARC secretariat to process the request made by South Korea,'' Khan said.

He also said he told the ambassador the SAARC countries are now finalizing the terms and conditions for new membership and observer status.

In the last SAARC summit in Dhaka in November, the leaders agreed to accept Afghanistan as a new member of the group. They also decided to welcome China and Japan as observers.

SAARC was established in 1985 to foster economic cooperation. It groups Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
