LEAD: N. Korean official to visit Myanmar for talks in formal ties

Asian Political News,  April 9, 2007

BANGKOK, April 7 Kyodo

(EDS: UPDATING)

A senior North Korean Foreign Ministry official is expected to visit Myanmar late this month to discuss resumption of diplomatic ties, diplomatic sources in Yangon said Saturday.

The sources said the official will visit the new administrative capital Nay-Pyi-Daw around April 24.

The official is believed to be Vice Foreign Minister Kim Yong Il, who has been involved in normalization talks with Myanmar.

Myanmar's military government and North Korea have had been at odds since North Korean agents attacked a South Korean delegation to Yangon in 1983.

The agents, said at the time to have direct links with now North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, were said to be targeting then South Korean President Chun Doo Hwan during an official visit to Yangon.

More than 20 people were killed and at least twice that number wounded in the North Korean bomb attack.
