CAIRO, Dec. 11 Kyodo

At least 47 people were killed when two car bombs exploded in upscale districts of the Algerian capital of Algiers on Tuesday, Reuters news agency reported quoting a security source.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but commentators said it appeared to be the work of al-Qaida's North African wing, which claimed a similar bombing in downtown Algiers in April and other blasts east of the capital over the summer, according to Reuters.

One of Tuesday's blasts struck near the Constitutional Court building in Ben Aknoun district and the other occurred close to U.N. offices and a police station in Hydra, both areas where several Western companies have offices, a source was quoted as saying.

Interior Minister Noureddine Yazid Zerhouni said a suicide attacker appeared to have detonated the bomb in Hydra, Reuters reported.
