14 security personnel killed in ambush in northeastern India

Asian Political News,  Feb 26, 2007

NEW DELHI, Feb. 24 Kyodo

At least 14 security personnel were killed and seven others injured Saturday in an ambush by insurgents in northeastern India, Press Trust of India reported.

The insurgents attacked the members of the India Reserve Battalion when they were traveling with election officials near Impha, the capital of Manipur State, PTI quoted sources as saying.

There were heavy exchanges of fire between the insurgents and security forces, it said.

Assembly elections were held recently in the state, where members of some ethnic and tribal groups have been engaged in a long-running separatist insurgency.
