China's Wen to visit Philippines Jan. 13-16

Asian Political News,  Jan 8, 2007

BEIJING, Jan. 4 Kyodo

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao will travel to the Philippines Jan. 13-16 to attend regional meetings including the ASEAN-plus-three summit as well as for a formal visit to the country, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said Thursday.

During his stay, Wen will attend a meeting with the leaders of the 10 Association of Southeast Asian Nations, a summit of ASEAN and its three dialogue partners China, Japan and South Korea, as well as the broader East Asia Summit, Liu Jianchao said at a regular press conference.

Wen will also preside over a summit bringing him together with the leaders of Japan and South Korea, Liu said.

Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing will also visit the Philippines Jan. 11-12 for related meetings, according to Liu. Li will also preside over a trilateral meeting with Japan and South Korea, he said.

The regional summits, originally scheduled for mid-December, were postponed due to a typhoon which was bearing down close to the venue. There was also speculation that terror threats may have prompted the organizers to postpone the meetings.
