LEAD: U.S. says 6-way N. Korea nuke talks to resume in 'next week or two'

Asian Political News,  March 26, 2007

WASHINGTON, March 22 Kyodo

(EDS: ADDING DETAILS)

The six-party negotiations on North Korea's nuclear programs that went into a recess Thursday after four days of mostly stalled talks will likely restart ''in the next week or two,'' a State Department spokesman said.

The delegates from the six nations involved in the six-way process ''will probably get together again in the next week or two,'' spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters.

His remarks came after the two Koreas, the United States, China, Japan and Russia went into a recess in Beijing earlier in the day without setting a date for the restart of the discussions, with Chinese chief delegate Wu Dawei saying only that negotiations will resume at the ''earliest opportunity.''

McCormack said the latest round of talks agreed to disable North Korea's nuclear facilities in ''this calendar year.''

He also said Daniel Glaser, U.S. deputy assistant Treasury secretary for terrorist financing and financial crimes, will travel to Beijing soon to resolve technical problems involving the transfer of frozen North Korea-related funds in a Macao bank allegedly linked to money laundering and counterfeiting.
