Nepal detains 130 Tibetan exiles in Kathmandu

Asian Political News,  April 21, 2008

KATHMANDU, April 18 Kyodo

Nepalese police broke up anti-China protests and detained 130 Tibetan exiles in Kathmandu on Friday.

Insp. Kumar Khatri told Kyodo News the Tibetans have been detained for chanting anti-China slogans near the Chinese visa office in central Kathmandu.

''All the detainees will be released later today,'' he added.

The Tibetan community has been organizing protests in front of the Chinese Embassy, the visa office and the main U.N. building in Kathmandu since March 10 to demand an end to Chinese suppression of protest in the Tibetan capital Lhasa.

They temporarily suspended protests April 3 to assist smooth holding of the constituent assembly election April 10, but they resumed their protests from Tuesday.

Nepal considers Tibet as part of China and anti-China protests by Tibetans are banned in the country.
