Overcoming the obstacles

Diverse Issues in Higher Education, Oct 4, 2007 by Linda R. McIntyre

As a doctoral student at Washington State University, one of my professors assigned each student to complete a research paper as a group rather than separately (see "Combating the Model Minority Stereotype," Sept. 6).

I chose the topic: The Model Minority Myth. I learned a great deal about the historical context, diversity and needs of Asian Americans in this country. This is a critical move. I think that what the scholars are doing is important, and it serves as a model not only for Asian American populations but also for all groups that have been under-served or disenfranchised. Continue your effort to overcome the obstacles, because the outcome is worth it.
