DR. DEBORAH E. MCDOWELL has been named director of the Carter G. Woodson Institute for African-American and African Studies at the University of Virginia. She also serves as the Mice Griffin Professor of Literary Studies at the university. McDowell earned a bachelor's from Tuskegee University and a master's and doctorate from Purdue University.
