Edge: Work-Group Computing Report, August 10, 1998

The Computer Systems Division (CSD) of Toshiba America Information Systems Inc. (TAIS) continues to define value-priced notebook standards with the introduction Monday of new Satellite models.

With high performance features including an Intel Pentium II 233MHz processor for only $1,999, Toshiba continues to deliver the highest performance features and fastest processors at the very best value.

The new Satellite series includes two models, the Satellite 4005 available through retail stores and the Satellite 4000 sold through resellers. Specifically designed for the retail buyer such as individuals, students and SOHO customers, the Satellite 4005 model offers tailor-made software applications with a choice of mobile productivity, education or entertainment packages. The Satellite 4000 model is sold through the traditional channel and targets small- to medium-sized business owners as well as corporate, government and education users.

"The Satellite 4005 and 4000 is a no-compromise solution offering a balance of value and performance," said Jeffrey Friederichs, vice president of marketing, Toshiba Computer Systems Division. "Living up to its reputation as the world's best selling notebook, these new Satellites raise the bar by delivering Pentium II technology and impressive features under $2,000."

Feature Rich Design at Industry-Setting Prices Equipped with powerful features to handle intensive computing requirements, all models in the Satellite 4005/4000 series feature an Intel 233MHz Pentium II processor, large 4.1 billion byte hard drive, 32MB of synchronous memory (expandable to 160MB), a 56K 3Com modem and a Lithium Ion battery for business applications, personal management programs and school work. Its convenient all-in-one drive design incorporates a fast 24X max speed CD-ROM drive, diskette drive and hard drive, giving customers immediate access to data in any format.

Web sites, business presentations and educational software come alive with a large 12.1-inch display, Yamaha sound system and two stereo speakers. With options to meet every budget, the Satellite series offers two displays: the Satellite 4005CDT/4000CDT features a brilliant active-matrix display while the Satellite 4005CDS/4000CDS features a Color-Bright dual-scan display. The Color-Bright display provides higher contrast and improved color richness than traditional dual-scan screens, delivering a higher quality display to price-conscious customers. The series supports two Type II or one Type III CardBus ready PC Card slots and features USB and Fast Infrared (FIR) ports. All systems include Microsoft's Windows 98.

Customer Choice Software Packages for Satellite 4005 Notebook In addition to industry-leading hardware, Toshiba's new customer choice software option lets buyers choose applications that best meet their needs. An entertainment bundle includes sports and interactive games, while a mobile productivity bundle includes remote connectivity, trip and route planning. A K-6 education bundle includes math, science, writing, reference and edutainment packages to help develop skills in younger children. An education bundle for Junior and Senior high school students includes math, science, writing and college prep packages.

Flexible Financing, Service and Support Programs Toshiba offers flexible financing and leasing programs, as well as comprehensive service and support and warranty programs to enhance customers' computing experience. Toshiba Financial Services provides simple and flexible financing and leasing options to large enterprise customers, small- to medium-sized businesses and education markets. The program gives customers increased purchasing power, flexible payment options, competitive rates and a variety of programs designed for their business needs.

The Satellite 4005/4000 series comes standard with a one-year parts and labor warranty. All Satellites are backed by Toshiba's service and support, available 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week through the InTouch Center. Toshiba also offers online support for electronic-based interaction via the Web, CompuServe Online Forum and the Electronic Solutions Bulletin Board.

Pricing and Availability Available in August, the Satellite 4005 with the new customer choice software option will be sold through Toshiba's retail channels, including computer and office superstores and consumer electronic stores. The system will also be sold as the Satellite 4000 series through traditional distribution channels including VARs, distributors and dealers.

Estimated single unit prices are $1,999 for the Satellite 4005CDS/4000CDS and $2,499 for the Satellite 4005CDT/4000CDT.
