Storage: Compaq Introduces Four New Hard Drive Options; Increasing Power and Performance for Deskpro Customers

Edge: Work-Group Computing Report, July 13, 1998

Responding to the growing need for faster, higher performing hard drives, Compaq Computer Corporation Wednesday announced four new hard drive options for Compaq Deskpro customers. The new Compaq hard drives include 2.1GB and 8.4GB Ultra ATA hard drives and 4.3GB and 9.1GB Wide UltraSCSI hard drives, available immediately worldwide. These new Compaq hard drives include Compaq's SMART self-monitoring technology and a pre-failure warranty. The unique SMART technology detects drive failure before it occurs and the Compaq warranty service replaces any hard drives that detect or experience any imminent failure.

The new Compaq 2.1GB and 8.4GB Ultra ATA hard drives are built on the industry-standard enhanced IDE interface to reduce the cost of implementation. The drives achieve a transfer rate of 33MB per second and an average access rate of less than 10ms, allowing users to store large amounts of data and access information on the hard drive twice as fast as regular hard drives. The 2.1GB Ultra ATA hard drive is available for $269(1) and the 8.4GB Ultra ATA hard drive is priced at $475(1).

The 4.3GB and the 9.1GB Wide UltraSCSI hard drives have an exceptional transfer rate of 40MB per second and run at 7200rpm, giving users increased capacity and speed for multi-tasking performance. In addition, the Wide UltraSCSI Controller option supports up to seven SCSI devices, including additional hard drives, CD-ROMs and scanners. The 4.3GB Wide UltraSCSI hard drive is priced at $549(1) and the 9.1GB Wide UltraSCSI hard drive is available for $899(1).

Compaq's enhancement products are designed to provide seamless integration with legacy and future products, while providing the highest level of service and support.
