Edge: Work-Group Computing Report, July 6, 1998
Xerox Corporation Wednesday announced a new entry-level model for its family of DocuTech publishers that lowers the point of entry for providers of digital print-on-demand and personalized printing services. The Xerox DocuTech 6100 Publisher prints high-quality images at speeds as fast as 96 pages per minute (ppm) and is the latest addition to the modular DocuTech Publisher Series.
The model can take advantage of the same powerful software services and add-on feeding and finishing devices that have secured the DocuTech family's long-time market leadership among quick, commercial and forms printers, and in centralized reprographic departments.

"A tremendous demand exists for economical print-on-demand equipment operating at speeds of less than 135 ppm, the long-time entry-level of the DocuTech line," said Thomas F. Wetjen, vice president and general manager, Production Publishing Systems, Xerox Corporation. "The DocuTech 6100 will accelerate the transition from light-lens and offset to digital."
The new model makes print-on-demand affordable at low print volumes for smaller operations and offers a clear upgrade path to higher capacity models as business grows. Because the DocuTech 6100 is completely interoperable with the other DocuTech products, it also is well-suited for use in satellite sites, in distribute-and-print-on-demand networks, and as a backup or complementary unit.
The DocuTech family addresses a market opportunity that Xerox expects to grow from 734 billion black-and-white pages today to more than a trillion pages by the year 2000. Key target applications for the DocuTech 6100 include books, booklets, brochures, forms, manuals and reports for a range of industries.
The new model is equipped with Sixth Sense Technology, a Xerox service tool designed to ensure maximum system availability with remote diagnostics and other service capabilities. It is backed by the Xerox Total Satisfaction Guarantee. The Xerox DocuTech 6100 is scheduled for availability during the third quarter of 1998 in the United States, Canada and Europe and has a U.S. list price of $192,000. FMI: www.xerox.com.
