Windows NT: Dell Computer Switches to Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0. Move From NetWare Results in Significant Cost Savings - Product Information

Dell Computer Corp. Wednesday joined a growing list of corporations that are moving to the Microsoft Windows NT Server operating system as their enterprisewide multipurpose operating system of choice. To resolve its year 2000 issues, Dell will replace more than 225 Novell NetWare 3.x and 4.x servers with approximately 25 servers running Windows NT Server 4.0. Windows NT Server 4.0 will be the company's file and print infrastructure, as well as the platform for applications and Web services.

"We are excited that Dell chose Windows NT Server as the foundation to help it move to the next millennium," said Jim Allchin, senior vice president, personal and business systems group, Microsoft. "By choosing a multipurpose platform that not only serves as a great upgrade for its file servers but also provides excellent Web, application and communication services, Windows NT Server enables Dell to get more out of its year-2000 investment."

Dell is currently using Windows NT Server as a platform for file and print, messaging, Web and proxy services. The broad range of capabilities of Windows NT Server, many of which are not available on other operating systems, will enable Dell to reduce support costs by consolidating its file and print and applications servers to Windows NT Server, achieving a consistent management paradigm across all of its servers.

"Dell was at a crossroads with its IT infrastructure," said Dave Wagner, CIO of infrastructure services at Dell. "Like the rest of the industry, Dell is addressing year 2000 issues. At the same time, our internal business processes demanded an operating system that would allow us to consolidate our applications and the majority of our networking infrastructure onto a single platform to drive down management costs. With Windows NT Server 4.0, running on Dell hardware, we have found our solution."

This migration is the latest in a growing number of companies taking advantage of the many services of Windows NT Server 4.0. Microsoft also announced the availability of Service Pack 4 for Windows NT 4.0, offering year 2000 updates, euro support, new and enhanced features, and the most comprehensive collection of updates for Windows NT 4.0.
