Iomega and Symantec Offer Free Norton Zip Rescue Utility Software - Product Announcement

Edge: Work-Group Computing Report, Oct 5, 1998

Iomega Corporation and Symantec Corporation, Tuesday announced Norton Zip Rescue (NZR), the industry's first and only Windows 95 and 98-based system recovery solution, as a free download at CNET's premiere Web site (www.download.com).

NZR will also be available for no charge at Iomega's Web site (www.iomega.com) and by linking from Symantec's Web site (www.symantec.com) beginning October 1, 1998.

Norton Zip Rescue software resolves common system problems such as Windows 95 and 98 registry corruption, damaged system files, partition table damage, and boot viruses or damage. In the event of a system failure where the PC won't boot up, Norton Zip Rescue allows Iomega Zip and Jaz drive owners to perform system recovery quickly and easily, while preserving the unique system settings and configurations of their computers.

"In order to deliver our customers the most effective operating system protection, Symantec has entered into a collaborative relationship with Iomega to produce Norton Zip Rescue," said Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec's Security and Assistance Business Unit. "We make full use of Zip's 100MB space. The Zip rescue disk contains a bootable version of Windows, Norton Zip Rescue software to analyze and fix the problem, and a copy of the computer's individual settings."

NZR provides a support safety-net for small businesses, corporate users and consumers alike. By guiding users through a simple recovery process, NZR empowers Zip users to fix many problems on their own, instead of relying on support centers. In this way, use of NZR may result in less downtime and reduced support costs.

"Wow! Norton Zip Rescue makes a big difference for our customers. It helps them save their system, and best of all, our customers can get it for free by downloading from our Web site," said Jim Taylor, chief marketing officer of Iomega Corporation. "By using Zip disks, customers have the ability to safely save and protect their information and their applications."

Creating a custom Zip rescue disk is straight-forward. Once the user downloads and installs the Norton Zip Rescue software, the next step is to run the program and create a custom Zip rescue disk. In the future, if a problem occurs where the computer won't start properly, users can boot from their Zip rescue disk. The Zip rescue disk will launch Windows (95 or 98) and then run the Norton Zip Rescue Wizard, which guides the user through the recovery process.
