Edge: Work-Group Computing Report, Dec 13, 1999

The Emergency Virus Response Team (EVRT) at Central Command Inc. will raise its alert level to 5, its highest readiness during December 27th through January 3rd to assist the expected flood of new computer viruses that will be discovered during the year 2000 transition.

During the year 2000 transition the increased activity and deliberate sabotage of computer systems and data is expected. It is estimated that a flooding of malicious viruses and other dangerous applications will occur and computer systems and data will be under constant attack.

This elite team of experts will assist customers and people who have discovered or have been the victim of a virus attack during this period. "We expect the virus writers, and other people developing malicious computer applications to use this transition period to unleash their creations," said Keith Peer, President of Central Command Inc. "Our dedicated team will be available around the clock to help people defend their systems. We have prepared for this period months ago and we will treat this period as a `disaster recovery' with our senior staff and dedicated teams standing ready for action."

One of the first viruses with Y2K destructive capability has already been discovered I-Worm.MyPics which can format the C: and D: drives when the computer is restarted in the new millennium and corrupt the computer's CMOS memory. "This will not be the last destructive virus or worm we will discover before the Y2K transitions and we are prepared for more. Any concerned user can reach the Central Command EVRT at http://www.avp.com or call us at 330-723-2062," said Peer.
