Linux OS Support for Wide Area Networking Communications Introduced by Performance Technologies - Company Business and Marketing

Edge: Work-Group Computing Report, Dec 20, 1999

Performance Technologies, Inc., a world class provider of high performance connectivity solutions for the telecom and datacom marketplace, Tuesday announced that it has added Linux operating system support to its family of Wide Area Networking protocol software offerings. Linux, the popular OS developed as an excellent cost effective alternative to more expensive operating systems, is recognized for its functionality and flexibility, and is used in a wide variety of networking and embedded telecom/datacom applications.

With the addition of Linux, PTI continues to expand its WAN hardware/software communications offerings for CompactPCI, PCI and PMC based T1/E1 and high speed synchronous platforms. PTI's ability to combine high performance software and hardware technology for telecom and datacom environments enables OEMs and system designers to develop a wide variety of advanced telecommunications products including gateway servers and other high availability solutions for Internet Protocol (IP) telephony networks.

PTI's integrated protocol software includes support for Frame Relay, X.25, HDLC, LAPD and Synchronous Bit Stream. In addition to Linux, PTI also supports other industry standard operating systems such as Solaris, Windows NT and VxWorks, allowing portability of WAN applications across multiple telecom platforms.

"Including Linux in our growing list of supported operating systems further enhances PTI's reputation as a full line supplier of WAN communications solutions," said John J. Grana, vice president and general manager for PTI's Controller Products Group. "With this latest addition, we are able to expand our position as a premier network connectivity provider to the growing telecom and datacom markets."

To complement Performance Technologies' operating system support for Linux, PTI is working with Motorola Computer Group, the leaders in embedded computing. MCG is developing high availability extensions to the Linux OS, aimed at providing the "five-nines" model for demand driven telecom applications. This offering, coupled with the hot swap capabilities inherent in PTI's CompactPCI WAN communications hardware, will result in a wide array of high availability solutions for the rapidly expanding telecommunications marketplace.

Price and Availability

PTI's TI/EI and synchronous communications products supported by the Linux operating system are shipping today on PTI's WAN-over-IP communications servers, and will be available for all other products early in the first quarter of 2000. List prices start at $795.

Performance Technologies, Inc., headquartered in Rochester, New York, designs, manufactures and markets a wide variety of high performance WAN communications solutions, which include WAN protocol software and hardware, and networking adapters and controllers. PTI's products are targeted towards high performance, mission-critical networking solutions in industries such as telecommunications, data communications, financial services, transportation and defense industry applications. PTI is a publicly traded company. FMI: http://www.pt.com.
