Edge: Work-Group Computing Report, Feb 15, 1999

Hewlett-Packard Company Thursday announced the availability of HP OpenPix Internet imaging software on Sun Solaris systems. Solaris is the latest of a growing list of platforms to be supported by HP OpenPix ImageIgniter, including Microsoft Windows NT and HP-UX(1). The Solaris version of HP OpenPix ImageIgniter delivers the same features as the Windows NT-based OpenPix product launched last June and the HP-UX version announced last December.

HP OpenPix products and services let Web users zoom in/out on, explore, pan and share Internet photos and other images to examine the detail of such things as clothing, jewelry, art and other visual communications. Additionally, HP's innovative software delivers the highest-resolution printing on the Web and provides image reports and usage analysis for Web-site owners and Internet Service Providers (ISPs). "HP OpenPix is designed to meet the robust imaging demands of the emerging e-commerce marketplace," said Srinivas Sukumar, general manager of HP's Internet Imaging Operation. "By adding the Solaris version of ImageIgniter to our growing portfolio of hardware platforms, we are continuing to increase the total business value we provide for e-retailers, ISVs and service providers." OpenPix ImageIgniter was designed to solve the network-bandwidth and image-resolution problem for companies implementing e-commerce and Web-site solutions. OpenPix ImageIgniter software has revolutionized how businesses use images to enhance their Internet, intranet and extranet business communications. HP OpenPix ImageIgniter is a tool for enhancing Web commerce, collaboration and communication. It offers the image-rich content that electronic storefronts and catalogs need to help convert browsing into sales, reduce product returns and build a highly satisfied customer base. HP OpenPix ImageIgniter Software Features HP OpenPix ImageIgniter provides a comprehensive set of services for managing and distributing high volumes of photo-quality images over the Web. It features the highest-quality viewing and printing on the Web, analyzes and reports on image use, integrates software authoring tools, and provides low-cost image operation and administration. OpenPix Adaptive Delivery allows images to be served to all major browsers and enables end users to select only the area of an image they want to view and then print that portion of the image at higher resolutions. This allows the developer, as well as the viewer, to customize e-catalog pages for the highest-quality viewing and printing on the Web. OpenPix Image Reporter tracks and analyzes the viewership of OpenPix-ignited composite images and delivers separate activity reports for each image element. Companies implementing ImageIgniter also can track the frequency of views and prints. OpenPix Authoring Assistant works with Web development tools, such as Allaire HomeSite and Cold Fusion Studio, Macromedia Dreamweaver and Microsoft FrontPage, to enable quick and easy Web-site ignition. OpenPix Service Manager provides a single point of remote or local administration, with user-configuration parameters, logging/monitoring and diagnostics tools. U.S. Pricing and Availability The OpenPix developer subscription is available for $495. HP OpenPix ImageIgniter software for Solaris is available for $4,995 per CPU.
