Edge: Work-Group Computing Report, March 15, 1999

Intel Corporation Monday announced two new, low-cost print servers that provide simple, reliable printing solutions for 10 megabit-per-second (Mbps) Ethernet networks.

In addition, the company has introduced Linux(a) and NetWare(a) 5.0 operating system (OS) support across its entire Intel NetportExpress 10 Mbps and 10/100 Mbps print server family.

"Intel is a leader in providing easy-to-use, high performance printing solutions," stated Jim A. Johnson, general manager of Intel's Network Systems Division. "The introduction of low-cost, full-featured 10 Mbps print servers provides a solution for price-sensitive network administrators who still need the management capability that larger networks require."

The new Intel NetportExpress 10 Print Servers are available in both a single-port version for standalone printers and a 3-port version for a lower connection cost with multiple printers. Designed to give network administrators and users high levels of compatibility and ease-of-use, Intel NetportExpress 10 Print Servers feature the same reliability and simplicity as Intel NetportExpress 10/100 Print Servers, which have been rated by an independent study to be the easiest to install and manage(b), reducing the overall cost of maintaining network printers.

First to Announce Printing Support for Linux in a Network Print Server Traditionally compatible with virtually any printer and all major operating systems for exceptional flexibility, Intel NetportExpress Print Servers now offer NetWare 5.0 and Linux printing support. "With its tremendous growth in 1998, Linux represents a significant operating system alternative in UNIX(a) environments," said Johnson. "Intel is the first print server vendor to announce Linux printing support in a network print server. Intel's customers will now benefit from network print support of the latest, most popular OS environments."

Built-In Features Save Time and Money Intel NetportExpress Print Servers come equipped with built-in wizards that reduce the time required for configuration and installation. With reduced complexity, network administrators, resellers and less technical employees can easily install Intel NetportExpress Print Servers to their printer. Intel also provides remote management of printers and print servers from Windows(a), Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) consoles such as Intel Device View and HP Openview(a), or from virtually anywhere in the world using a browser and an Internet connection via the products' built-in web server. Intel NetportExpress Print Servers also provide network administrators with a simple way to upgrade their firmware through Windows or via the web. Free software updates for new and existing NetportExpress Print Server customers are available at the following location on the web: support.intel.com/support/netport/10100/index.htm.
