Notebook Sales: HP Sees Dramatic Growth in Sales of HP OmniBook Notebook PCs Preinstalled With Windows NT Workstation 4.0 - Product Announcement

Edge: Work-Group Computing Report, March 29, 1999

Hewlett-Packard Company Wednesday announced that sales of HP OmniBook notebook PCs preloaded with Windows NT Workstation 4.0 have increased 400 percent in a six-month period, according to company records.

An HP OmniBook notebook PC loaded with Windows NT Workstation 4.0 is a powerful combination for companies of all sizes looking for increased security, enhanced performance and a single companywide operating system for both desktop and notebook PCs.

"This sales spike is a testament to the popularity of Windows NT and to the effectiveness of our efforts to ensure that our HP OmniBook notebook PCs are optimized for use with the Windows NT Workstation 4.0 operating system," said Laura Demmons, product marketing manager for HP's Mobile Computing Division.

"We're seeing that an increasing number of customers are purchasing notebook PCs as their primary computers," said Brad Chase, vice president, Windows marketing and developer relations at Microsoft. "Windows NT Workstation 4.0 has become the ideal operating system for the business environment, and HP OmniBook Notebook PCs are optimized to take full advantage of the benefits Windows NT Workstation has to offer."

Recognizing the demand for Windows NT Workstation 4.0 among its customers, HP developed plug-and-play and power-management solutions that address the mobile limitations of the operating system. These solutions include the following:

* CardExecutive for Windows NT from HP and Phoenix Technologies: Facilitates the management of mobile-computer PC cards, allowing users to hot swap advance technology attachment and PC Modem cards without the loss of data.

* Advanced Power Management for Windows NT from HP and Phoenix Technologies: Delivers advanced power-management capabilities by automatically powering down idle components when the computer is running and by providing two power settings that automatically configure the PC for either "best PC performance," or "best power conservation."

In addition, HP OmniBook notebook PCs are certified Microsoft Windows 2000 Ready, ensuring customers a smooth migration to the next version of Windows NT. The Windows 2000 Ready PC Program enables businesses to take advantage today of the performance, reliability, security and lowest total cost of ownership of the Windows NT Workstation 4.0, while making plans to use Windows 2000 Professional in the future.
