Edge: Work-Group Computing Report, May 17, 1999
Executive Software, the leading supplier of reliable system management tools, has released a freeware version of its Emergency Undelete file recovery tool for Windows NT.
Now available for download from www.executive.com, Emergency Undelete is a new tool that recovers accidentally deleted files directly from any NTFS or FAT disk and can even recover files that were deleted prior to its installation. It can eliminate the hours of time spent searching through back-up tapes for vital lost files, and can quickly restore what was previously unrecoverable.

The Recycle Bin captures files that are deleted from Windows NT Explorer only. Files deleted through other programs such as File Manager, from the
command line, or from within applications, are not sent to the Recycle Bin. In addition, files that are deleted across a Windows NT network from one computer to another also bypass the Recycle Bin and are permanently deleted.
Emergency Undelete is one module of the full Undelete data protection product. The full-featured product provides an enhanced "Recovery Bin" that captures and stores files deleted from all sources, including all files that bypass the Recycle Bin. The full version is the only product with enhanced "Recovery Bins" that work across the entire Windows NT network to allow for remote recovery of files.
Andre Gaudet at IBM Global Services in Alberta, Canada said: "We recently recovered a distraught client's 95-page year-end report with Emergency Undelete. In a matter of moments her frown changed to the biggest smile I've seen in a long time. The look of relief was priceless. The install of the product was easy, the GUI was intuitive and the product did what it said it would do. I was very impressed and have asked the powers that be to put this product on all 75 of our servers."
According to a study done by data recovery specialists Ontrack Data International, five times the amount of data loss is caused by human error than is caused by computer viruses. In addition, they estimate that 80% of tape backups fail or are not available at the critical moment of need. This is due to worn out or corrupted tapes, or the tape heads have failed to record the needed files.
Estimated street prices for the full-featured Undelete are $49.95 for the Workstation version and $259.95 for the Server version. Undelete is compatible with Windows NT 4.0 and the available platforms include Intel and Alpha. The workstation version of the product needs to be installed on all workstations in the network in order for the Server version to connect to them and be used for network-wide file recovery. Undelete fully supports all Windows NT security permissions and privileges.
For over a decade, Executive Software has established industry standards with products that increase performance and simplify management for networks and enterprise-class systems. The full-featured Undelete and the Diskeeper disk defragmenter for Windows NT are both featured on the Windows Magazine Win List of highly recommended products.
The Microsoft Press book: "Running Windows NT Server 4.0" advises the use of Diskeeper for better performance. Microsoft Corp. has included a limited manual version of Diskeeper within the Windows 2000 operating system itself. Executive Software is located at 701 N. Brand Blvd., 6th Floor, Glendale, Calif. 91203. Phone numbers are 800/829-6468 and 818/547-2050.
