Edge: Work-Group Computing Report, Nov 22, 1999
Mitsubishi Display Products, creator of the industry's broadest line of award-winning monitors and displays, Monday announced the Diamond Pro 2040u.
With a constant .24mm dot pitch, this is the first of Mitsubishi's flat-screen CRTs to include uni-pitch technology. The 22-inch screen also allows for a higher dot count than competitive monitors with a maximum resolution of 2048x1536, as the full 20-inch DVI allows for more surface phosphor.
The $1,349 Diamond Pro 2040u introduces improvements to the patented Natural Flat technology that has already captured many industry awards for delivering the first, undistorted, natural looking images on a CRT.

"The announcement of the Natural Flats last year was probably the first significant CRT technology news since aperture grille launched almost 20 years ago," said Herb Berkwits, product manager for Mitsubishi.
"Our immediate efforts following that announcement were to build upon that excitement and continue to raise the innovation bar in desktop monitor technology. The Diamond Pro 2040u is the first product of those efforts."
The new monitor from Mitsubishi begins shipping in December and is a technology assortment of first-ever features and patented technologies.
Mitsubishi Patented Technologies DIAMONDTRON NF (Natural Flat) CRT -- As in all of the NF designs, Mitsubishi has applied a calculated polynomial curve to the internal screen surface and aperture grille which, in essence, pre-distorts the image, compensating optically for the refraction of light passing through the CRT glass which causes the concave effect that other flat CRTs exhibit.
Uni-Pitch CRT -- The new, patented CRT in the Diamond Pro 2040u has enhanced the performance of the S-NX DBF electron gun for the uni-pitch aperture grille including reduced spot size from center to corner for superior screen focus uniformity. The exclusive deflection yoke technology adds improved beam landing, especially in the corners, providing, once again, the flattest, sharpest, and brightest monitor available in the industry.
FlatOn Instant Convergence -- A patented temperature-sensing, dynamic beam landing optimizer (DBLO) has been designed to compensate for warm-up sequences. All other CRTs of this quality do not meet maximum performance until they have been operating for at least 30 minutes. This waiting period is over with the Diamond Pro 2040u. Instant stablized images are now possible with the new FlatOn technology.
DiamondLite II Glass -- Mitsubishi has also improved its proprietary glass system that replaced the old conventional glass used in cylindrical CRTs. The original NF monitors used more of this glass than conventional CRTs but the weight of the unit did not increase because Mitsubishi invented a glass tempering process for lighter glass. In the Diamond Pro 2040u this process has been refined to allow the glass to be thinner as well, shrinking the size of the CRT by 2mm. The new flat, glass screens continue to significantly reduce the effects of ambient lighting and external reflection and glare for easier viewing.
USB Capabilities Once again, the `u' following the monitor name is significant, indicating that this unit features a USB hub. Mitsubishi is the only manufacturer to equip the self-powered USB hub with an exclusive arrangement of two upstream and three downstream ports so two independent computers may share a single set of USB devices.
The peripheral connections follow the video signal for simple, hassle-free operation. The USB monitor controls have also been improved for easier, more intuitive monitor adjusting and set-up.
Specifications The new Diamond Pro 2040u has a 30-121 kHz horizontal scanning range, and 240 MHz video clock frequency. On-screen display (OSD) controls allow easy manipulation of over 20 separate settings, including brightness, contrast, positioning, geometry, purity and convergence.
The Diamond Pro 2040u meets TCO 99 and MPR-II emissions, EPA Energy Star, DPMS and NUTEK power management standards and is DDC compliant for Plug & Play. Perfect for any application or work environment, the 2040u is compatible with IBM, Apple Macintosh, Power Macintosh, Windows 98, and high-resolution third-party graphics standards.
Mitsubishi Display Products markets the industry's most extensive line of 15 to 22-inch (13.8 to 20.0-inch diagonal viewable image) award-winning color displays. These include the Diamond Scan, Diamond Plus, Diamond Pro, and LCD lines of desktop monitors; PrecisePoint touchscreen monitors and the SpectraView color calibrated display systems.
All are distributed through a selective network of authorized distributors, resellers, dealers and retailers throughout the United States and South America. FMI: www.mitsubishi-display.com
