TurboLinux and Dell Computer in Linux Bundling Deal; Dell Shipping TurboLinux on its Precision WorkStation Series in Japan - Company Business and Marketing

Edge: Work-Group Computing Report, Oct 18, 1999

TurboLinux, the leader in high-performance Linux, announced Tuesday that Dell Computer is shipping its Precision WorkStation series in Japan bundled exclusively with TurboLinux. Customers can also purchase Linux support services from TurboLinux through Dell's DellWare program.

The agreement is Dell's second bundling deal with TurboLinux in Japan, following a successful quarter of sales of TurboLinux Server on Dell Poweredge servers. The Austin-based hardware vendor assumed number one market share in Japan for workstation sales of Microsoft Windows NT in the second quarter of 1999, according to IDC Japan. TurboLinux is the number one Linux vendor in Japan, with more than 50 percent market share, according to Business Computer News.

"Although there are many Linux distributions, TurboLinux has the best Japanese environment," said Hiroshi Fukino, Chairman and Representative Director for Dell Computer Corporation. "We see Linux helping to drive our WorkStation sales. And because TurboLinux has such a strong engineering and support organization, we wanted them as our partner for support."

"Dell is increasingly popular with our Japanese corporate customers and we are pleased to offer our Linux solutions pre-bundled," said Cliff Miller, CEO of TurboLinux. "By combining our Linux software solutions with our expert Linux services and support, Dell can deliver their corporate customers robust Linux WorkStations that they can depend upon."

The Dell Precision WorkStation series 210, 410, and 610 are available through Dell's Japan web site at http://www.dell.com/jp/store or by calling Dell direct.

TurboLinux, formerly Pacific HiTech, was founded in 1992 and has emerged as the world's fastest growing Linux company. Since 1998, TurboLinux has shipped more than three million units of Linux globally and is the Pacific Rim's dominant supplier with a market share of more than 50 percent, according to Business Computer News, a Japan-based market research company. TurboLinux offers the only version of Linux designed for the "double byte" character sets of the Japanese and Chinese alphabet as well as European languages. The company's high-performance consumer and business Linux products are designed for Intel workstation and server platforms and supported globally by IBM and Hewlett-Packard. Headquartered in San Francisco, TurboLinux has offices in Tokyo, Beijing and Sydney. The company's home page is located on the Internet at www.turbolinux.com or, in Japanese, at www.turbolinux.com.
