Vitesse Introduces the TeraPOWER Development Environment for DWDM Optical Switches and Multi-service Router Designs - Product Announcement

Edge: Work-Group Computing Report, April 3, 2000

Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (Nasdaq:VTSS) Tuesday announced the availability of the TeraPOWER Development Environment, a highly integrated toolset and multi-protocol application library.

The TeraPOWER Network Processor provides network equipment development engineers with true wire rate packet processing and Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning for data rates in excess of 2.5Gb/s in Internet Core, Access, Enterprise routers, DWDM and Optical switch applications. The TeraPOWER Development Environment enables designers to rapidly develop and deploy network solutions for the Vitesse family of network processors and includes the TeraPOWER Workbench simulation environment, the TeraPOWER Library of software functions, API (Application Programming Interfaces) interfaces for IPv4, IPv6, MPLS protocols and SNMP/RMON network management.

Incorporating cycle accurate performance models of the Active Flow Processors used in the TeraPOWER family, the TeraPOWER Workbench provides a complete environment for code development and analysis. Extensive breakpoint capabilities are provided, including infinite break locations and a deep trace buffer for performance analysis.

Application profiling capabilities are also available, ensuring rapid convergence to optimal code. All analysis is performed in conjunction with source-level debugging.

The Workbench is available for Windows 98 and NT platforms and includes an intuitive GUI (Graphical User Interface) interface. All on-chip resources for supported processors are available via user-configurable windows. The same user interface is available to software developers writing code on the simulator and to hardware developers debugging target platforms. Creation and maintenance of test data is facilitated with a point-and-click form for the development of custom IP (Internet Protocol) packets.

The TeraPOWER multi-protocol software Library includes source code for a variety of common switching and routing tasks, which accelerates the network equipment designer's learning curve. High level APIs provide a common interface to protocol stacks and database management functions. Support for IPv4, IPv6 and MPLS are all included in the TeraPOWER Library as well as API interfaces for SNMP/RMON functions. Combined with the Workbench, the TeraPOWER Library offers the designers the ability to perform near-real-time verification of their system performance.

"We've designed the TeraPOWER Development Environment to be the native development environment for network equipment designers working with the Vitesse solution," stated Samba Murthy, vice president of marketing for the advanced networking products division at Vitesse. "We've achieved this goal by providing an easy, intuitive platform which enables our customers to significantly reduce the timeline from the beginning of development through to field trials," concluded Murthy.

Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation is a world leader in the design, development, manufacturing and marketing of high bandwidth communications ICs for next generation DWDM and optical networking. The company's products address the product needs of Core, Access and Enterprise network equipment manufacturers who demand a combination of high speed, high complexity and low power dissipation.

As a co-founder of the CSIX (Common Switch Interface) forum, Vitesse is cooperating with 30 other member companies to define and develop open architecture and interoperable standard components for high speed networking. Vitesse is headquartered in Camarillo, California, and manufactures volume ICs at its two fabrication facilities in Camarillo and Colorado Springs.
