3Com Corporation Thursday announced the appointment of Julie A. Shimer as vice president and general manager of 3Com's consumer business, known as the Residential Connectivity Group (RCG).
Based in Rolling Meadows, Ill., the RCG includes analog, cable & DSL modem products, along with phoneline and wireless home networking and the residential gateways that join these technologies together. Dr. Shimer most recently served as a corporate vice president and general manager at Motorola, Inc.
"3Com's compelling vision for the `digital home' attracted me to this opportunity. The company has all the critical intellectual property and brand recognition to be extremely successful," Dr. Shimer said. "I believe 3Com can position itself as an undisputed leader in producing consumer networking products that positively impact people's lives."

"Julie has exactly the right blend of technical, consumer and business background we were looking for," said Jef Graham, senior vice president and general manager of 3Com's Personal Connectivity Business Unit and Dr. Shimer's direct supervisor. "She will be the driving force continuing the development of innovative, simple and reliable products that will improve productivity and convenience at home."
Dr. Shimer is a leading figure in the electronic engineering community and in January 1999 was nominated by Wireless Week magazine as `one of the most influential women' in business. She is a senior member of IEEE and Sigma Xi. Dr. Shimer is a senior member of the Society of Women Engineers and was a charter member of the Lehigh Valley Section. She serves on the National Medal of Technology nomination evaluation committee, has authored more than ten technical papers and holds one U.S. patent.
Dr. Shimer joins 3Com with 18 years of experience in the technology industry. Her most recent position included responsibility for major global product development and marketing for pagers, programmable cell phones, wireless modules and PDAs. Before joining Motorola in 1992, Dr. Shimer worked for 10 years at Bell Labs in the company's semiconductor operations. She holds a Ph.D in electrical engineering from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.
