EMC Enhances e-business for International Paper; EMC Helps World's Largest Paper Company Scale SAP Infrastructure Rapidly and Without Downtime - Company Business and Marketing

Edge: Work-Group Computing Report, June 5, 2000

EMC Corporation, the world's leader in information storage, Wednesday announced that International Paper (NYSE:IP), the world's largest paper and forest products company, is extending its EMC E-Infostructure to support several e-business and business intelligence initiatives. International Paper's partnership with EMC extends IP's ability to compete with the new start-up .com businesses, helping position it as a leading player in the e-business economy.

"EMC is driving up the online availability of our applications - which is key to fulfilling our strategic goal of getting closer to our customers," said J. Chris Scalet, International Paper's Vice President of Information Technology and Chief Information Officer.

With nearly $25 billion in annual revenues, Purchase, N.Y.-based International Paper has standardized on an EMC Enterprise Storage Network to provide centralized storage to SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), including human resources, finance, billing, order processing, sales, distribution, and inventory management. International Paper's e-business applications - including online catalog, inventory and order management - are also stored on EMC Enterprise Storage systems.

International Paper's Scalet added, "At the heart of our strategy is information capacity - which is where the value of EMC comes into play. We can now scale our SAP infrastructure rapidly and without downtime, helping us to meet our strategic objectives on time and ahead of the competition. EMC also ensures internal and external access to our systems 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The results are millions of dollars saved, improved service across the entire supply chain, and ultimately higher profitability."

"International Paper is a prime example of the `dot-coming' of global 2000 business," said Mike Ruffolo, EMC's Executive Vice President of Global Sales, Services and Marketing. "With EMC E-Infostructure as its backbone, International Paper is executing on its vision of enterprise-wide access to information without limits - perhaps the most critical requirement for leaders in the new economy."

"We're working with EMC to extend our SAP applications and data warehouses from our corporate offices out to our business units and international operations," International Paper's Scalet also said. "This is an extremely challenging task when you consider we're factoring in 100,000-plus employees and many more thousands of customers, suppliers and other partners."

International Paper has implemented 25 terabytes of EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems and Fibre Channel switch-based EMC Connectrix network systems supporting IBM RS/6000, Compaq Windows NT and Sun servers, as well as IBM mainframes. International Paper is further improving information availability and management through the use of EMC software solutions such as EMC TimeFinder, EMC PowerPath, EMC InfoMover, and EMC ControlCenter. EMC Professional Services, a team of highly trained consultants, worked with International Paper to speed architecting and implementation.

"EMC's supply of advanced software tools enables us to continuously fine-tune our environment," explained Steve Schaefgen, Director of Technical Services at International Paper. "We recently used TimeFinder to save 20 hours of outage time as we upgraded our SAP environment. TimeFinder allowed us to mirror our production environment as it was running instead of having to bring it down to create a backup copy on tape. TimeFinder also reduced our daily backup time from 10 hours to 15 minutes."
