20bit audio codec for surroundsound

Electronics Times, Feb 22, 1999

The AK4526 from AKM is a 20bit multi-channel codec with a dynamic range of 100dB, designed for digital surroundsound and car entertainment systems.

Requiring a single 4.5 to 5.5V power supply, the device can handle input formats such as IIS and includes two channels of A/D conversion and six channels of D/A conversion. The ADC section has an enhanced dual bit architecture and 645 over-sampling, while the DAC uses switched capacitor filter techniques which achieve a low outband noise and high jitter tolerance.

Each DAC also has 1285 over-sampling and individual attenuation control from 0 to -20dB in 1dB steps; the ADCs can be bypassed using an auxiliary digital audio input to supply audio data to the audio output port.

Master clock requirements for the codec are 256, 384 or 512 and there is deemphasis for 33, 44.1, 48 and 96kHz. The device can be supplied in a 44pin LQFP package and operates over the temperature -10 to 70 degrees C.
