PC audio codec is AC97 rev 2-compliant

Electronics Times, March 15, 1999

The AK4542 from AKM is a second-generation multimedia audio codec that complies with the Intel AC97 specification and exceeds Microsoft's PC98 requirements.

Featuring a 3D stereo enhancement block, the codec includes two pairs of stereo outputs with independent volume controls, a mono output and multiple mono and stereo inputs. It consumes 240mW in full operation from 5V analogue and/or 3 or 5V digital supplies and has multiple power-down options.

By using proprietary delta sigma D/A and A/D converters, the device achieves a signal-to-noise performance of 90dB. There are inputs for line, CD, video auxiliary, speakerphone, PC beep and two independent 30dB gain MIC inputs. A stereo output channel can also produce a 1Vrms output.

The AK4542 requires fewer external components than previous models, and includes a PC beep pass-through mode that eliminates the extra speaker. It is supplied in a 48pin QFP package.
