Readers may remember our recent story about Gordon Wilson, the founder of Sussex-based contract manufacturer Wilson Process Systems, and his attempt to set a new land speed record for a blind solo motorcylist (Electronics Times, 12/6/00).

We can now report that Wilson was successful in posting a new record of 78.4mph, although bad weather - particularly heavy rain in Yorkshire as he made his attempt earlier this month - may have stopped him reaching his target of 100mph.

"Of course, I am disappointed to some extent but I will not let it take away from my achievement and I can look forward to improving on it next year," Wilson said.

Equally good news comes in the form of #7000 that has been raised so far for the NSPCC. Further donations can still be made and one way to get details on this is to point your web browser at www.wps.co.uk and head for the Gordon Wilson page.

Jonathan Perry has joined the board of the Isle of Wight Cable and Telephone Company (IOWCTC) as chairman. He is currently also executive chairman of the Paragon Group and has previously held senior positions at HSBC Investment Bank and Morgan Grenfell. The IOWCTC is to spend #24m over 18 months on the construction of an advanced comms network, starting in September.

Al Stein, former CEO of VLSI Technology, has joined the board of directors of Yield Dynamics, a Santa Clara-based developer of yield management and lithography process control software for the semiconductor industry.

GlobeCast Northern Europe, France Telecom subsidiary and provider of satellite and data broadcast services, has taken on Steve Fairbrother as head of its business, Internet, and datacoms division. He will market the company's main DigiCast service.

Dieter Hoffmann has joined Linux specialist Red Hat as its head of central European operations. A veteran of Siemens and Cadence Design Systems, he was most recently in a role focusing on large embedded services at Cygnus.
