Processor in video subsystem line-up

Electronics Times, May 8, 2000

Exar has announced two CMOS CCD processors representing the fourth generation in the company's video subsystem product family. The XRD9859/98L59 single-chip, low power, AFE is targeted at the growing charged coupled device (CCD) still and motion video imaging markets.

This processor refines the features of its predecessors, the XRD9855 and 9856. The clipper and digital black-level noise suppression filter capabilities offers high image quality levels.

The XRD9859/98L59 operates at some of the industry's lowest drawn and standby power consumption levels: 120mW at 3V and 200mW at 5V. This design feature is said to significantly extend battery life of devices such as digital still cameras.

The processor produces a high-quality, 10bit output and implements the latest calibration architecture that uses a pixel averager, hot pixel clipper and DNS filter. The processor also offers features such as programmable aperture delay which provides system design flexibility to optimise the CCD signal to noise ratio (SNR).

The processor is made in low power CMOS technology. At 20MHz, the processor and future offering faster speeds will enable manufactures to design that feature rapid or almost continuous still frame image capture similar to 35mm photography.

The product includes a high bandwidth differential correlated double sampler, 8bit digitally programmable gain amplifier, 10bit ADC and improved digital controlled black level auto-calibration circuitry.
