Processors upgrade portable servers

Electronics Times, May 8, 2000

Tadpole-RDI has upgraded its Sun-compatible portable server range for 64bit Solaris computing with the 440MHz UltraSPARC-IIi processor.

Available in the UK from Rugged Systems, the VoyagerIIi range weighs 10lbs and is suitable for the deployment and use of Solaris applications in field sales, portable industrial processing, security and exhibitions.

The servers are said to provide all the power, performance and features of standard Sun servers but are claimed to be more practical for mobile use than traditional desktop hardware.

They are 100% binary compatible with Sun servers and have up to 32Gbyte removable disk capacity and 1Gbyte memory, with extensive system expansion including dual PC-Card ports and PCI expansion slot.

Support for the native Solaris 7, 2.6 or 2.5.1 operating system allows the VoyagerIIi to run all major SPARC/Solaris applications.

The 2.5in disks incorporate four high-speed Ultra-DMA controllers, each supporting a single Ultra-IDE disk, and are arranged as two removable twin packs of 8Gbyte disks.

The servers come with OpenWindows 3.x and AutoNETP2 software tools plus NTP, NIS DHCP, NFSP2 and DNS. They are also shipped with Java tools - Java virtual machine and HotJava browser.
