US and UK sign fighter aircraft deal - Brief Article

Electronics Times, Jan 29, 2001

The UK and US governments have moved to a new stage on the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF), potentially the world's biggest-ever military procurement programme.

The two countries have signed a memorandum of understanding covering the fighter's engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) phase. Up to 5000 JSFs will be built, creating a procurement market worth $400bn.

The MoD expects the EMD phase to "create or sustain" 5000 UK jobs in up to 70 companies.

UK companies are well represented in each of the two consortia competing to ultimately produce the JSF. One group is led by Boeing, the other by Lockheed Martin.

Demonstration aircraft from both groups recently began initial flight trials.
