Russian authorities Thursday fined a Japanese fishing boat about 15,000 dollars (1.8 million yen) and ordered it to pay 232,000 dollars in compensation to the state for illegally operating in Russian waters, Interfax news agency reported. Interfax said the Russian Federal Border Service slapped the penalty on the Wakashio Maru No. 63, which allegedly caught salmon in waters off the southern Kuril islands, part of which is claimed by Japan.
