TOKYO, Aug. 12 Kyodo

Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi on Monday expressed her condolences to victims of flooding in southern Russia which has left at least 58 people dead and forced more than 2,000 others to evacuate, the Foreign Ministry said.

''I pray for the victims to rest in peace and I pray from the bottom of my heart that the residents (who have evacuated) are able again to live in peace soon,'' Kawaguchi said in her condolence messages, according to the ministry.

Kawaguchi sent the messages to Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and Russian Minister of Civil Defense, Emergencies and Clean-up Operations Lt. Gen. Sergei Shoigu via the Japanese Embassy in Moscow, the ministry said.

The flooding is due to heavy rain centered around the southern Russian city of Novorossiisk.
