Israel protests Palestinian lecture in Kanagawa school

Japan Policy & Politics,  Jan 28, 2002

YOKOHAMA, Jan. 24 Kyodo

The Israel Embassy in Tokyo has protested to an elementary school in Kanagawa Prefecture about a lecture on Palestine given by a daughter of the founder of the Japanese Red Army, school officials said Thursday.

The city-run school in Fujisawa, southwest of Tokyo, has received a letter from the embassy expressing regret for the talk on Dec. 15 by Mei Shigenobu, 28, whose mother is Fusako Shigenobu, the officials said. Fusako Shigenobu, 56, the founder of the radical group that was active in the 1970s, is on trial for charges including attempted murder.

In the letter, the embassy said the talk contained a ''blatant, biased political'' anti-Israel message when Mei Shigenobu showed a slide of Palestinian children throwing stones at an Israeli tank, according to the officials.

But the officials said that in the talk, Shigenobu only commented that although Israelis and Palestinians have their own opinions on the issue of granting territory to Palestine, both still use the same kind of kitchen range to cook meals.

''It was agreed beforehand that the talk would not touch on sensitive issues such as politics and religion. There were no biased point in the lecture,'' the school principal said.

The talk, which also included a cooking demonstration of a Palestinian dish by Shigenobu, was a part of a sixth-grade class on international understanding through gastronomic culture. The talk was organized by the class's teacher, the officials said.

Shigenobu's mother was arrested in Osaka in November 2000. She has been indicted on five charges for allegedly masterminding the Japanese Red Army's 1974 seizure of the French Embassy in The Hague.
