Depressed seniors benefit more from talk therapy

Women's Health Advisor,  Feb, 2007

An analysis of eight clinical trials finds that talk therapy, especially cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), is better than medication for depression in older adults. The trials compared various forms of CBT alone or in combination with medication, compared with the "usual care" recommended by physicians (most often drugs).

While most patients who received CBT did better than those given medication, the biggest benefits came from an "interdisciplinary" approach, when mental health providers worked closely with primary care doctors. The finding is important because most older adults prefer to seek treatment for depression from their primary care physician, but also favor talk therapy over drugs, researchers from VA Palo Alto Health Care System in California, wrote in the November 2006 issue of Health Psychology.
