Kids Celebrate Earth Day - Brief Article

A new education initiative from AMERICAN FORESTS helps children celebrate the 30th anniversary of Earth Day.

"A Tree for Every Child," AMERICAN FORESTS' practical, one-week program for students and youth groups, teaches children how direct, practical action can create a better world. Individual classrooms, entire grade levels, or whole schools may participate. Students raise $1 per child, with each dollar planting one Global ReLeaf tree in a damaged ecosystem.

Teachers may request a packet with a colorful "trees and kids" poster, art plans for students to create a "tree-mometer," a reproducible teacher's guide, and other helpful materials. AMERICAN FORESTS also will provide a certificate of appreciation large enough for each child to sign.

More than 400 teachers have already requested information about available Earth Day activities through Earth Day 2000, coordinator of the national celebration that includes a major rally in Washington, DC, on April 22. AMERICAN FORESTS is a partner with Earth Day 2000 in this effort to offer teachers meaningful classroom materials.
