Help On A Global Scale - Brief Article
American Forests, Spring, 2000
Building on its status as a leader in climate change, AMERICAN FORESTS sponsored more than 95 percent of forestry and agricultural projects in 1998 aimed at reducing global warming, according to a new report from the Energy Information Administration of the federal Department of Energy.
"Voluntary Reporting of Greenhouse Gases 1998" showed that AMERICAN FORESTS' Global ReLeaf projects sequestered a total of 52,125 metric tons of carbon dioxide since it began reporting in 1992. That's equivalent to a year's worth of emissions for 5,200 Americans.
This year for the first time an individual household reported its efforts to EIA and was listed alongside big businesses and corporations fighting climate change. Do your part--without having to call in your efforts--by visiting AMERICAN FORESTS' carbon debt calculator at www.americanforests.org.
The calculator computes your family's contribution to climate change and determines how many trees you must plant to offset your actions. You can choose to plant trees and "pay your debt" through AMERICAN FORESTS' Global ReLeaf program.
The calculator will be updated this spring thanks to a gift from Shaklee Corporation, a leading manufacturer of health and wellness products and a partner in both climate-wise and climate-neutral initiatives to fight global warming.
