A different kind of park access

American Forests, Spring, 2005

In a sign that the modern world is pretty much everywhere now, California has announced a deal to offer wireless Internet access points in 85 state parks.

The New York Times reports the access points, offered in conjunction with SBC Communications, will generally be centrally located in the parks. Visitors will be able to have free access to the state government's web pages for information like road closures; those wanting wider access or to send and receive e-mails will be charged $7.95 for 24 hours.

A state official told The Times he envisions people will use the technology to learn about campgrounds and safey information. One site is now accessible in a state park in San Diego; others will be ready by May.

SBC said it had similarly equipped a few parks in Michigan. The Times added that SBC does not yet plan to expand access "beyond the central campgrounds, but in the future might consider placing connections in the farther reaches of the parks."
