J. Frank Schmidt Jr., founder of J. Frank Schmidt & Son Co. of Boring, Oregon, who spent a lifetime in the nursery industry and was a leading grower of shade and flowering trees. He was honored for his horticultural efforts with the Oregon Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Progress Award in 1998 and the Garden Writers of America's Wilfred J. Jung Distinguished Service Medal in 1999.
