Mourning: former Forest Service chief John R. McGuire, 85, who died April 6 of brain cancer and emphysema. McGuire, a career professional with the USFS, was chief from 1972 to 1979, during which time major Forest Service legislation was enacted, including the Renewable Resources Planning Act and the National Forest Management Act. McGuire also served on AMERICAN FORESTS' Board of Directors.
Thomas W. Levermann, who died in April of a heart attack. Levermann was a 26-year veteran of the Natural Resources Conservation Service and worked closely with AMERICAN FORESTS during the 1980s on youth environmental education programs. He had been a state public information officer in Kentucky. Levermann was also director of information-education for the Papio Natural Resources District and an urban conservationist with the former Douglas Soil and Water Conservation District, both in Omaha, Nebraska.
