American Forests, Summer, 2005

Welcoming: James E. Hubbard of Virginia, to AMERICAN FORESTS' Board of Directors. Hubbard directs the U.S. Department of Interior's Office of Wildfire Coordination. A long-time member of AMERICAN FORESTS, Hubbard is the former state forester/director of the Colorado State Forest Service and worked with congressional committees on the 1990 Farm Bill.

Lynda C. Webster owns a Washington, DC, consulting firm specializing in board development, fund-raising, special events, and strategic planning. A former consultant to the Central Intelligence Agency, she has served on the boards of more than 20 community organizations including the Salvation Army, Friends of the National Arboretum, and the Ronald Reagan Institute for Emergency Medicine.

A two-term president of Team Bank of America, Charlotte, North Carolina's Environmental Network, Tom Lannin has long been an environmental leader. He has served as chair of the Charlotte Tree Advisory Commission and on the board of local nonprofit Voices & Choices.

Sarah J. Silver is executive director of Alan B. Slifka Foundation, a family foundation in New York specializing in support for diversity and difference. Silver was a television documentary producer for ABC News Peter Jennings Reporting, Rain Media, and PBS Frontline. Silver was formerly the associate director of media relations for the Natural Resources Defense Counsel.

Honoring: Jerry F. Franklin, recipient of the 11th annual Heinz Award for the Environment. The Heinz Family Foundation presented Franklin with the $250,000 prize for his innovative logging strategy, which has won praise from environmentalists and timber companies alike.

Dr. Edgar Wayburn and Norman L. Christensen Jr., recipients of Pacific Forest Trust's Outside the Box Awards. The awards honor achievement in forest stewardship and conservation.

Moving Up: Richard Paterson, to director of Grey Towers, a national historic landmark and former home of Gifford Pinchot, the first chief of the U.S. Forest Service. Paterson replaces Edgar B. Brannon Jr. after 15 years as director.

Retiring: Eric Oldar, urban forester with the California Division of Forestry. A long-time friend of AMERICAN FORESTS, Oldar served with CDF for 30 years.
