Indian summer in Brussels - Native American art; Muses royaux d'art et d'historie, Brussels, Belgium - Brief Article

Magazine Antiques, Jan, 2000 by Miriam Kramer

An exhibition devoted to the history and civilization of the Indians of North America is on view at the Muses royaux d'art et d'histoire in Brussels until March 26. The exhibition's chief sponsor is AGF-Belgium/Allianz Group. Entitled Indian Summer: The First Nations of North America, it ranges from the Inuit in the Arctic to the Apaches in the southwestern United States and from several thousand years ago to the present.

Combining historical, geographical, ethnographic, and artistic approaches, the exhibition explores the customs, religions, social organization, everyday life, and art of the Indians. Along with some six hundred period artifacts are life-size reconstructions of a Plains Indian tepee, a long-house from the Northeast, a wooden house from the Northwest, a kiva from the Southwest, and a pioneer wagon. There are demonstrations of totem pole carving, ritual ceremonies, and dances. The museum's cafeteria has become involved by offering thematic food.
