Public Catalogue Foundation

Magazine Antiques,  July, 2003  by Miriam Kramer

Until now no single catalogue has existed of the holdings of oil paintings in all the public museums in the United Kingdom. The Public Catalogue Foundation, formed earlier this year, aims to fill this void, location by location. The board of trustees includes such luminaries of the art world as Alan Borg, a former director of the victoria and Albert Museum in London, and Kate Trevelyan, the managing director of the Burlington Magazine.

The first two volumes of the catalogues will be published in September and will comprise works held in the various museums in Leeds and Kent. All paintings will be illustrated in color, and each will be accompanied by medium and dimensions. According to Frederick Hohler, a former diplomat and businessman who had the original idea, "these catalogues will serve as a 'Pevsner' of holdings of paintings in the national galleries in the United Kingdom."

The project, which is not-for-profit, is expected to take up to ten years. Each volume will be available in hard and soft cover and can be obtained by telephoning 44-20-7932-8424.
